A bank statement, a medical record or a contract should not travel by email or WhatsApp unprotected. If the message is forwarded by mistake or someone gets into the phone, the document is exposed. With a password, the PDF cannot be opened without it, even if it ends up in other hands.

Step by step

  1. Go to "Protect PDF" on LeuPaPDF and choose the document.
  2. Type the password twice. The meter tells you whether it is weak, fair or strong.
  3. If you want, also check "Prevent printing", "Prevent copying" or "Prevent editing".
  4. Press "Protect PDF" and download the file. When opened, any PDF reader will ask for the password.

How to pick a good password

  • Make it long: a short phrase like "Rain in Lima 2026!" is safer and easier to remember than "X7#k".
  • Do not use your ID number, your birthday or the name of someone close: those are the first things people try.
  • Send it through a different channel than the PDF. If you email the file, share the password by message or call.

Opening password vs. restrictions

The opening password prevents viewing the document. Restrictions (print, copy, edit) apply to whoever could already open it: they keep a shared document from being easily changed or printed. Keep in mind some programs can ignore restrictions; the opening password, on the other hand, is real encryption (256-bit AES).

Tip: Keep the password somewhere safe, for example in your password manager. If you forget it, there is no way to recover it: not even we know it, because encryption happens in your browser.

What if I need to remove it later?

Use "Unlock PDF" and type the password: you will get an unprotected copy. Without the password it cannot be opened, and that is exactly the point.
